So where is the best place to start? We've all heard the old saying that time is money, well in planning a wedding it IS. You MUST give yourself at the very least one year to plan and prepare. The money starts rolling and pouring out of your pocket when you are pressed for time. When you don't give yourself the chance to shop around.
Next thing is start a savings account at the very least put it in an envelope and don't carry it around! If you feel you can spend $25 a pay check on the wedding, put it aside. Keep it out of your regular budget. You know there will be some big expenses to cover, venue, dress, caterer, cake. Just start tucking some cash away for when you do run into that sale.
When shopping like this I will give you some parenting advice, I have used this advice in EVERY area of my life and it still holds true. Pick your battles. Pretty easy huh? Well here is my thought, you need to figure out what is most important to you, is it the dress? the venue? the table settings? What is that one thing that you just HAVE to have? For me, I want a gorgeous dress. I have never had a real "formal" dress. I want that feeling of royalty, I think I am too old now to want to be a princess, but I want to feel like a queen. For me, a portion of the budget is going to the dress. Knowing this, I realize that there will be other areas that are not so important, invitations and table settings. I may or may not rent china dishes and I definetly will not be buying couture wedding invitations.
This coming year I will be shopping, scouring clearance and end of season sales. Some of the things I will be looking for will be the end of season silk flower sale at Michaels. Yep, I think I am going for silk for one reason, I have a niece that is a fantastic crafter but she lives 3 states away. I am hoping to mail the flowers and ribbon to her and let her work on them at her leisure.
Another thing we are doing right now is finding the venue. Actually, the venue is what dictates alot of the rest of the wedding. We are looking at a turn of the century mansion in Louisville. It is completely restored with hardwoods and chandeliers. The antique furnishing lend to the old history that my Beloved and I love. I want to get the deposit and contract done before the beginning of next year. Many places raise their fees yearly, so if I want this years price I must do it now!
